There are so many dogs in shelters waiting for someone to adopt them, but for various reasons it can take some longer than others to find homes.
Some shelter animals form close relationships with other pets, and those pairs are considered “bonded,” meaning they would be best to find a home together. But while no one wants to split up two best friends, it can be hard to find someone willing to take in two rescues at once.
That was the case for two bonded dogs, who waited in a shelter nearly a year hoping to find a home together. And just when things seemed hopeless, they finally found a family who would adopt them as a pair.
Donna and Karan are a pair of 4- and 5-year-old mixed-breed dogs. They arrived at the Licking County Humane Society, in Ohio, last year after being transferred from another shelter.
It became clear that the dogs were very close, and also very shy and skittish. The shelter deemed them to be bonded, realizing it would be much better if they had each other in their new home.
However, finding that home was no easy task. It can be harder to find someone willing to take in two dogs, and the dogs’ timid personalities made it hard to stand out from the pack.
“They are on the shy side to start and are getting overlooked,” the Humane Society wrote. “But our staff and volunteers will tell you that once they hang out for a bit with you they become the most affectionate and playful duo! They will truly make your home such a happy one.”
In addition to needing to be adopted together, the dogs were also looking for a home well-suited to their skittish personalities.
“To make sure they’re most comfortable, we’re looking for a quiet home with no small children or other rowdy pets,” the Humane Society wrote. “We also need them to have a home with a fenced yard bc they can be a bit skittish.”
But they assured any prospective adopters that this pair dogs would be double the fun and double the love.
“They love playing fetch, chasing each other around the yard, giving the sweetest kisses to you, and snuggling together for naps.”
Over 300 days passed, and Donna and Karan still had no adopters. No one was willing to take in these good dogs.
But that all changed recently. After 347 days of waiting, just shy of a whole year, they finally found their “furever home.”
The Licking County Humane Society announced on Tuesday that Donna and Karan had been adopted by the Peori/Humbert family, and even better they’ll have two canine siblings to play with in their new home.
The shelter posted a photo of the dogs with their new family. “Thank you so much for choosing to rescue this special needs bonded pair!”
