Soldier never considered himself a ‘cat person’ until a visit to the shelter changed his mind

Life works in unexpected ways, especially when it comes to animals. Sometimes pets we never imagined ourselves owning turn out to be the perfect companions.

That was the case for one US Army soldier, who visited a shelter and adopted a pet he didn’t expect.

The soldier, only known by his username Spamwisejamkey, shared his story on Imgur. He was in Virginia, and with a huge snowstorm coming in a shelter was looking to get all their pets adopted immediately.

He decided help out and take the opportunity to adopt a dog. He has always considered himself a “dog person.”

However, they did not have any dogs left when he arrived at the shelter… but he didn’t go empty handed.

He adopted a kitten instead!

That photo is from the first time they met, and it’s clear why he suddenly became a “cat person.” The two hit it off immediately.

“I’m not a cat guy, but I guess you could say I’m a cat guy,” he wrote.

He named the cat Barb, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Barb likes to sit on his shoulder and laying in the sun beams.

While Spamwisejamkey has clearly warmed up to cats, he still has plenty of room in his heart for dogs.

After adopting Barb, he gave her a sibling and got a dog named Rupert.

“Still a dog guy… but also a cat guy,” he wrote.

The two get along and are best buds.

It just goes to show that you don’t need to be a “dog person” or a “cat person”… sometimes you just see a pet and know it’s meant to be!
