Back in 2025, a severely ill dog arrived at a county shelter in Texas in heartbreaking condition.
Her skin was cracked and infected, and her entire body was stained with a strange purple substance that immediately alarmed rescuers.
Once the rescue group This Is Houston learned about her, they stepped in without hesitation and arranged emergency care.
She was rushed to a veterinary hospital, where doctors began treating her life-threatening condition. Staff quickly noticed that the dog was covered in a strange purple color, and at first, no one knew what it was.

Veterinarians later determined that the purple coating was likely an antiseptic meant for livestock, possibly used in a desperate attempt to treat a severe case of mange.
When foster caregiver Bri first saw the intake photo, she felt an instant connection.
“I don’t know why, but I was just like, ‘I have got to be that dog’s foster mom,’” Bri, who asked that her last name not be shared, told The Dodo.
The dog, later named Violet, was placed into Bri’s care as soon as she was discharged from the hospital. From the moment she arrived, Bri focused on making her feel safe and warm.
“She was cold because she had no hair,” Bri said. “So I immediately put pajamas on her.”

Wrapped in soft clothing and finally able to rest, Violet began to relax. After everything she had endured, she drifted into deep sleep.
For weeks, Bri cared for her constantly, giving medicated baths, applying coconut oil, and keeping her comfortable in cozy pajamas.
“She’s feeling better and is definitely enjoying being spoiled and taken care of now,” Tara Hall of This Is Houston told The Dodo.
Physically, Violet — who was believed to be a Chihuahua mix — began to transform as the purple staining faded and her fur started to grow back. But the change wasn’t only on the outside. Her personality started to shine through, revealing a gentle, affectionate dog who is learning to trust again.

”She’s no longer purple. She’s no longer suffering. She’s no longer unloved. She’s no longer unrecognizable. It’s amazing what the right meds and TLC can do!,” the shelter wrote in an update.
In May 2025, This Is Houston shared another uplifting update about Violet.
“She had adoption interest early on from a family in NY and she recently flew to them with the assistance of two flight angels at SWATT Transport! She landed safe & sound and it was easy to spot her family when she arrived (see their precious sign).”

Her new family quickly fell in love with her, and her adoption was officially finalized shortly after.
“Her family absolutely adores her and we finalized her adoption today! Crazy how life can change so drastically for a once unwanted Texas pup.”
“Happy tails, Violet!”

What a wonderful transformation for her! Wow! Thank you to all of you for taking her in and never giving up. She looks so happy and beautiful! Happy Tails sweet Violet! Your best days are upon you!
