3 men beat and cut police officer with box cutter when police dog jumps into action and saves his life

Dogs have been used to keep us safe for centuries.

Some dogs are specifically bred for this purpose and risk their lives every day to keep us humans safe.

It is something that Officer Todd Frazier knows all about.

A seemingly straightforward check of a suspicious vehicle at the side of the road led him into a dangerous ambush that could have had tragic consequences, had it not been for his faithful four-legged friend.

Deputy Todd Frazier, from Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, in Mississippi works alongside his trusted K9 partner, a black Belgian Malinois named Lucas.

Lucas is a huge help to the force, but Deputy Frazier had no idea that one day this honorable hound would end up saving his life.

Found an unconscious man

Deputy Frazier was on patrol in Pearlington when he spotted a blue Lincoln Town Car with a darker vinyl top parked in a rest stop. The driver sat inside alone with no lights on.

It was dark when he got out of his vehicle to check on the driver in his car but as he did two other people came out of the woods.

‘Slit his throat’

It seems that the officer was being ambushed and was surrounded by three men who then beat him and cut him with a box cutter.

“They told him they were going to slit his throat, and they were dragging him toward the woods,” Chief Deputy Don Bass told USA Today.

But what his attackers didn’t realize was that Deputy Frazier wasn’t alone.

“The three of them were dragging him toward the wooded area, and he was able to break one hand free to activate the button that opens the (squad car) door and it released Lucas,” Chief Bass said.

He immediately ran at the men and started attacking them. Lucas bit at least one of the suspects, potentially saving the officer’s life.

“We don’t know how many he got, we just know he had blood all over him,” Sheriff Ricky Adam said.

Frazier suffered a 2 1/2-inch cut to his forehead and multiple injuries. His trusted friend Lucas suffered a torn ligament, some broken teeth and a road rash.

Both are expected to make a full recovery.

“Deputy Frazier is a good deputy and takes his job seriously. He is also an excellent dog handler – he trained Lucas himself,” Sheriff Adam said.
