German shepherd was shot in the head in January — but now he has a loving new home

It’s shocking how some people treat animals, and some poor pets experience such pain and suffering at the hands of humans. But thankfully there are also kind people in the world willing to step up and care for these animals, helping them overcome the odds and get a second chance.

That was the case recently, after one dog who was shot in the head made a recovery — and now has the happy ending he deserves.

In January, Louisville Metro Animal Services said they had taken in a dog named Magic, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Magic’s jaw was broken when a bullet entered above his right eye and exited on the right side. According to WLKY, the angle indicated that Magic was looking at the person who shot him.

According to WAVE, he received emergency medical care at Jefferson Animal Hospital. He was placed on pain meds and fed by syringe.

But despite everything he went through, Magic was said to be in “great spirits” and described as the “sweetest boy.” Magic lived up to his name by miraculously beating all the odds.

“He’s in great hands,” Louisville Metro Animal Services wrote on Facebook. “We are just thankful he made his way to us.”

Magic soon began a road to recovery. He was taken in by Kentucky Humane Society and placed in a foster home with one of their staff members; KHS said the foster “tirelessly helped Magic heal physically and emotionally from the cruelty he experienced at the hands of a human.”

After months of care and reparative surgeries, Magic was ready to find his forever home. The sweet dog soon drew the attention of one woman, who was just grieving her previous dog.

“I lost my dog in January and I was just starting to think about getting another dog when he magically appeared online. And so I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I want this dog,'” Melanie Gilzene, a 50-year-old teacher, told Good Morning America.

“I always have a heart for animals and this one particularly, he just deserves a great life and I know that I can give him that so I rushed to call them quickly to get this foster thing going.”

Melanie and her family took Magic in for a 14 day trial period as part of the rescue’s “Foster First” adoption program. Everyone fell in love with Magic and knew it was meant to be, so they decided to adopt him for good!

KHS staff shared photos of Magic leaving the shelter with his new family, and said that staff gathered to bid farewell to this special dog as he goes on to his forever home.

“Now Magic can finally put his past behind him,” KHS wrote on Facebook. “While this goodbye was bittersweet to say the least, we are honored to have played a part in Magic’s awe-inspiring story.”

We’re so glad that Magic survived that horrible gunshot and now has a loving new home! Thank you to everyone who saved him ❤️🥰
