Former Russian war dog switches sides after being rescued by Ukrainian troops

The war in Ukraine has been going on for months now, and countless Ukrainians have stepped up to defend their country. Animals, too, have been invaluable in the war effort, working alongside soldiers to save lives and provide morale.

And one new recruit might be the most unexpected: a former Russian war dog who has “switched sides” after being rescued by Ukrainian troops.

Max, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was originally part of Kremlin troops who captured a village in Mykolaiv, according to the Daily Star. But the dog got left behind as the forces retreated, and was later found by members of the Ukrainian National Guard, emaciated and starving.

“We can’t understand why the Russians would leave behind such as lovely animal,” one of the soldiers told the Daily Star.

The troops were surprised the dog was abandoned — not only was it inhumane but war dogs are valuable, specially trained and usually have a strong bond with their handlers.

But Russia’s loss was Ukraine’s gain: the soldiers saved the dog — and Max, despite being trained by Russian, switched allegiances, and is now working with the Ukrainian soldiers. “They are tremendously loyal but Max has obviously been convinced that the Ukrainians are now his new masters.”

“From now on, Max will serve on the right side, defending Ukraine and nibbling Russian asses,” said Dmitry, a member of the National Guard, according to a Facebook post.

After regaining his health, Max found a job with his new allies, sniffing out booby traps and Russian mines. He joins heroic dogs like Patron, saving countless lives.

It’s quite a story, and the troops are happy that Max made the right choice — and are proud that they were able to take in this new recruit.

“Max has become a real favourite with the guards,” the troops told Daily Star. “Ukrainians love dogs, they regard them as part of the family.”

Thank you to these soldiers for saving Max after he was abandoned — we’re happy to see Max is in good hands now and fighting for Ukraine!
