It was an image that shocked animal lovers across the nation, a man driving to a remote area and dumping his dog.
The man in Tulsa, Oklahoma, pulled over on a dirt road and left his dog without food and water before driving off.
But instead of chasing after his vehicle the dog trusted this man so much he waited in the same spot for nine hours, as if believing that he would return.
Thankfully the man was caught on surveillance cameras and rescuers were sent out to help the powerless pooch.
The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals picked the dog up and took him to their clinic for a checkup. They called him Rocket and made sure he had food and water before giving him the all clear.
Staff from the Oklahoma Alliance posted a picture of Rocket and his cruel owner dumping him in the hope of catching him.
“This is absolutely not ok. Dumping a poor defenseless animal in the middle of nowhere and driving away is cruel,” they wrote alongside the images.
“While we understand that people may be struggling to care for their pets due to COVID, there are resources and organizations here to help, including us. Doing this to living, feeling being should never be the answer. This beautiful dog was taken to a rural area and abandoned by someone he likely trusted. The dog waited 9 hours for his person to return. His person didn’t.
“OAA’s rescue team headed out and picked up the pup (now Rocket). We will ensure he is vetted and has a full belly and a safe warm place to rest his head. We will ensure he never suffers this fate again.
“Rocket was lucky. Trail cameras caught the act in progress, and rescuers were able to respond. If cameras weren’t rolling, who knows what fate would have befallen Rocket.”
It wasn’t long before Rocket found a new home where he received all the love and care he deserved.
I hope the man responsible for dumping Rocket was caught and stopped from ever keeping animals again.
Rocket was so lucky that camera footage was able to show his abandonment and he was saved before anything bad happened to him.
