Blind senior dog found safe weeks after disappearing from home: ‘She means everything’

It’s always a difficult experience when a dog disappears from home. When your beloved pet is out there in the world alone, you worry about their safety — a fear that’s even worse when the pet has a disability.

But it’s important to never give up hope: one family recently got an unlikely miracle after their blind dog was found safe and sound, weeks after wandering off from home.

According to the Daily Sitka Sentinal, via AP, the Kubacki family of Sitka, Alaska were left heartbroken after their golden retriever, Lulu, disappeared from their home on June 18.

“She means everything,” owner Ted Kubacki told the Sentinel. “I have five daughters and they’re 4 to 13 years old, so they’ve spent every day of their life with that dog.”

Making things even scarier, Lulu was a blind senior dog, and the family began to fear for her safety. “She’s just so helpless, and you kind of imagined that she can’t get real far because she can’t see.”

The family searched everywhere, but couldn’t find Lulu. As weeks went by, they became disheartened — especially after a prankster gave them false hope by claiming they found the dog — and started to lose hope.

But then, they got a miracle. A construction crew found an animal in an embankment, initially believing it was a bear. However, they got a closer look and realized it was a golden retriever.

Lulu was finally found — dirty, dehydrated and underweight, but still alive. The construction workers got her out of the embankment and helped her return to her family.

“I called my wife from work and it was just screaming… She just starts yelling, then she yells to the kids. And I just hear them screaming like crazy,” Tend told the Sentinel.

He says the dog had been “through the wringer” and was in bad shape during their reunion. But since then she has been recovering, and recently found the strength to lift her head up and kiss her owner. Even better, local neighbors even donated to cover Lulu’s veterinary bills for her recovery.
