Man tries to steal huge Newfoundland dog – then Chihuahua steps in and would-be thief has second thoughts

When you think of a guard dog most people would think of a big, powerful canine but you’d be surprised what some dog owners keep not only as a much-loved pet but also a guard dog.

Sharon Dooling keeps a Chihuahua dog called Charlie, alongside a massive Newfoundland dog called Silas.

When a man entered the back yard of her St John’s home in Canada and tried to take her big dog Silas, it was his tiny furry brother that saved the day, as well as some inner strength from their protective human mom.

It was a Saturday night when Sharon let her two furry friends outside to play.

Less than a minute had passed when her Chihuahua Charlie started to bark incessantly. It was so loud that Sharon felt she had no choice but to go outside and investigate.

“I actually came out to get mad at her for barking and I saw Silas, my Newfoundland dog, just go around the corner of the house,” Sharon told CBC News.

‘No you’re absolutely not’

But what Sharon actually found was a man attaching her big dog Silas’ leash to his own and walking off with him!

“I said, ‘Excuse me, what are you doing?’ and he told me he’s taking HIS dog and I said, ‘No, you’re absolutely not,’” Sharon told CBC News.

Who knows how any of us would have reacted in that kind of situation but Sharon said all she could think about was getting her dog back.

So, Sharon then punched the would be dognapper in the face. Probably not the most advisable response as you never know how someone else will react but in Sharon’s case the man ran off, leaving Silas with his rightful owner.

Sharon said she could have done a lot of things but getting her dog back was her only focus, and she was prepared to do anything to achieve this.

‘Just punch him’

“That’s the only thing I could think of. I’m little, I’m a little tiny person and this guy was around 5’8″, 5’9″ and there was no way that I was going to be able to wrestle the dog out of his hands so the only thing I could think was just punch him.”

Sharon credits the cries of her Chihuahua with saving her huge Newfoundland from being stolen.

“Never underestimate the power of a yappy Chihuahua,” she said. “It’s an inconvenience or a nuisance, you could say, when she does bark, but she’s my guard dog.”

I bet this low life dognapper thought stealing Silas would be easy as there was only a Chihuahua dog there, but boy did he get that wrong!
