Shelter volunteers left in shock after owner’s excuse for dog’s gruesome injuries

When Quinn arrived at the Hounds in Pounds, Inc shelter, her body was a roadmap of pain.

Her skin was raw and inflamed, covered in open sores and signs of severe mange. Her face bore wounds that resembled chemical burns. And her back leg?

Fractured in two places — the kind of injury that doesn’t just happen overnight.

Hounds in Pounds is nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia, dedicated to ending the daily euthanasia of thousands of adoptable dogs across the United States. Not long ago, HIP took in a dog whose heartbreaking story touched thousands and left a lasting impact.

When the severely injured dog Quinn was surrendered to the shelter, the volunteers at Hounds in Pounds could hardly believe their eyes. But what made the situation even more shocking was the explanation they heard from her former owners.

Their excuse? As unbelievable as it was cruel: “We just woke up and she was like this.”

Unimaginable pain

Shelter staff didn’t need a vet degree to know that wasn’t true. The truth was written in every scar, every tremble, every infected patch of skin. Quinn had suffered — likely for a long time — and no one had stepped in to help her.

Until now.

Quinn is just a young dog, barely at the beginning of her life. But the pain she’s endured is unimaginable. We may never know exactly what happened in the home she came from, but we knew one thing the moment we saw her: she couldn’t wait another day.

Fortunately, the heroes at Hounds in Pounds was doing everything they could to save Quinn. First, they cleaned her wounds, gently removed the filth and infection, and showed her the first flickers of kindness. Thanks to their care, her eyes began to soften. Her body began to exhale.

But she wasn’t out of the woods yet.

Two selfless volunteers, Abby and Geoff, drove over 3.5 hours to get her safely to a veterinary partner of Hounds in Pounds. Now, Quinn is still receiving intensive treatment to fight the infections that have taken over her frail body, according to an update from HIP.

Once she’s stable, she’ll undergo surgery to repair her broken leg. But for the first time in her life, Quinn is safe. She is seen. She is loved.

And though her road to recovery is long, she didn’t give up — and neither will we.

Please keep Quinn in your heart as she begins the journey toward healing. Her strength is already shining through — and with your love behind her, she has every reason to believe in tomorrow.
