Pit bull offers up his dog house for stray cat going into labor

Dogs are such incredible, caring animals — it’s always inspiring to see their protective instincts kick in when a smaller animal is in need of help.

It’s especially inspiring to see dogs helping cats. Despite their stereotypical rivalry, dogs can be their sweetest friends.

Like one pit bull, who offered his home to a stray cat about to give birth.

Juan José P. Flores, from Mexico, would always see the same stray cat wandering around his neighborhood, and would give her food, according to The Dodo.

And Juan’s dog—a pit bull named Hades—also apparently had a soft spot for the stray cat. This became clear last Spring, when Juan found the cat inside Hades’ doghouse:

Juan made the discovery after he heard his pit bull making an urgent sound: “He was desperate and making a lot of noise,” he told The Dodo.

He soon discovered why it was such an emergency: the stray cat was going into labor!

It became clear that the kindhearted Hades offered up his doghouse as a shelter, a safe spot to deliver her babies.

“He dragged a blanket over to the entrance of his house and settled outside the door,” Juan said. “She felt protected by him.”

The stray cat soon gave birth to two kittens. Juan brought them inside, and says Hades continued to keep a close eye on the family.

“I think he felt that he was a father,” Juan told The Dodo. He planned to find homes for all the cats.

While pit bulls have a reputation for being aggressive—and a name like “Hades” might conjure an image of a big, scary dog—this story shows how sweet and gentle these dogs can be.

“Pit bulls are good dogs,” Juan said. “Hades put everything aside to help someone else. We should do the same without expecting anything in return.”

What a great dog! It’s an adorable story with a great message, spread the word by sharing this story!
