Dog owner spots baby possum clinging to dog’s back

“So here’s something you don’t see every day. A Puli (Kato) with an orphaned baby possum attached,” Sally Watkinson wrote on Facebook.

And the frightened female possum showed no signs of leaving Kato’s backside. Luckily neither Kato nor Sally’s other dog, Hugo, noticed Kato was carrying some extra baggage.

“Jon spent the rest of the afternoon researching wild life rescue and eventually had to walk the dogs to a nearby vet to let them take the possum prior to collection by the wildlife rescue,” she wrote.

While they attempted to find help for the creature, Sally commended her dogs, especially Hugo, for not barking at the possum.

The following day Sally went to Jon’s to pick up her dogs and to her surprise there was another hitchhiker on the back of one of her dogs. This time it was a male possum and he clung to the back of Hugo.

“Quite astonishing.”

While the first possum didn’t appear to cause any discomfort to Kato, this possum caused some trouble for Hugo, though he still managed to ignore it.

“This time, the vet nurse nearly fell off her chair when we turned up,” Sally wrote.

Currently the possums are being cared for by a wildlife rescuer and will be released once they are ready. Since possums usually give birth to litters of two to three babies, Sally is on the lookout for another little critter.

What a good eye!

Thank you for spotting these little guys and for taking them to someone who can properly care for them before they are released back into the wild.
