Volunteers locate and rescue missing dog who fell off cliff, reunite her with owner

It’s always heartbreaking when a dog goes missing, especially when they disappear in the wilderness. It’s hard to know where to begin to look, and you’re left wondering if your beloved pet is safe and alive.

But in situations like this, it’s nice to know that people have your back and will help you look. That was the case recently, after volunteers stepped up to help locate a dog that had fallen off a cliff.

Saryta Schaerer was heartbroken after her dog, a mastiff-retriever cross named Luna, disappeared in the Highlands area of Vancouver Island, according to CTV News.

Saryta and her family searched everywhere, but days passed with no sign of the dog. They began to fear for the worst.

“It was terrible because it was getting colder and she always sleeps next to me or my daughter,” Saryta told CTV.

But a week after Luna went missing, they got a positive sign. A local man named Ron Cheeke heard the sound of a dog crying, and used a pot and pan to follow the sound to the dog’s location.

“Every time I banged on the pot and pan the dog barked back,” Cheeke said.

This led to a team of volunteers going out to look for Luna, who was found clinging to a narrow cliff ledge. The dog had apparently fallen off the cliff and managed to hang on to the narrow landing for the whole week.

Thankfully, her ordeal was finally over as the team used a harness to get her back to safety. Soon, Luna was overjoyed to reunite with her family.

“I was so excited, she was too,” Saryta told CTV. “Her butt was wiggling from left to right.”

It’s all thanks to the kindness of strangers, who were happy to go out of their way to help a dog in need. Cheeke says his own dog died last year, so he was happy to be able to reunite Luna with her family.

“There’s no feeling like it. When you’re involved with this and you get the owner back with the pet, it’s worth all the money in the world,” said volunteer Andy Carswell. “Your dog’s out there, it’s just a matter of time until we get her.”
