Puppy named ‘Pistachio’ is born with rare green fur

Newborn puppies are always adorable, but one little pup is really getting people’s attention.

In a rare phenomenon, the puppy was born a very unexpected color that has certainly made him stand out from the litter.

Cristian Mallocci, a farmer from Sardinia, Italy, is the owner of a dog named Spelacchia, who on October 9 went into labor, giving birth to five puppies, according to Reuters.

But while most of the puppies were white just like their mom, one was not like the others: he was green!

The unusually-colored newborn turned heads, and earned him a fitting name: “Pistachio.”

It is a very rare, but not unheard of occurrence for puppies to be born with green fur. It happens when light-colored dogs have contact with a green pigment called biliverdin in their mother’s womb.

It also isn’t permanent: the green of his fur has already faded since birth, and will continue to do so as he grows up.

But while his unusual color is temporary, Pistachio has already proven to be the pick of the litter.

Cristian Mallocci told Reuters that he is going to find new homes for the other puppies, but is going to keep Pistachio, raising him to be a sheep dog on the farm, just like his mother.

What an adorable puppy! It’s definitely not every day you see a dog like this! Share this amazing story!
