White German Shepherd gives birth to unusual lime green puppy

He may not be Clifford the Big Red Dog, but he’s just as intriguing. Hulk the lime green puppy has caught the eye of not only his new family, but the entire internet.

Friday morning Shana Stamey’s white German Shepherd gave birth to a litter of puppies. The dog, Gypsy, gave birth to eight little bundles of joy in just three hours. Each one just as special as the last.

For a first time mother, Gypsy was doing well, but when the fourth one entered the world Shana paused.

“And then I realized the puppy was moving, and he was lime green,” she told WLOS.

Unlike the puppy’s siblings, the fourth one was a bright lime green–it has since begun to fade and now appears yellow.

Besides its unusual color, the puppy and his siblings were healthy.

“I knew it wasn’t like harmful,” she said. “But I still had to look it up again to make sure.”

Junaluska Animal Hospital veterinarian technician Suzanne Cianciulli said the puppy’s coloring is most likely due to meconium, an infant’s first stool.

“The sack that they’re in when they’re in their mom, there can be meconium in there and that tends to stain them.”

When it came time to pick out names for the puppies, the family had the most fun deciding on a name for the little green one. After debating over Gremlin and Pistachio, they settled on Hulk because not only did the name match his color, but it matched his personality.

Over time the lime green puppy’s color will fade, from licking and bathing, but until then the Stamey family will enjoy their special pup. Once all the puppies are old enough they plan on finding loving homes for all of them.
