Video captures the very first howls of a young wolf pup

Children go through a lot of milestones as they grow up: their first steps, their first word, etc. It’s always so special to see these moments in person or to capture them on video.

But what about animals? It’s not every day you get to see an animal reach these milestones.

But one video captures the heartwarming moment a young wolf has his first ever howl!

The video, shared by Voyageurs Wolf Project on YouTube, was taken in the Northwoods of Minnesota.

The wolf pup, reportedly just four weeks old at the time, finds his voice and excitedly, loudly howls.

A wolf’s howl is the most iconic and distinctive feature of their species, and is an important part of their survival. Howling is how wolves communicate with one another: they can warn each other of danger and alert others of their location, even across vast distances. (It’s a myth, however, that they “howl at the moon.”)

With that in mind, this unique, rare rare moment can be said to be akin to the wolf’s “first words,” a big milestone in the pup’s development.

And it doesn’t take long for the pup to get the hang of it: his howls get quite loud, and you can hear other wolves responding to him from the distance.

At the end of the video, the pup runs off, wagging his tail as if proud of his new accomplishment, and presumably reunites with his pack.

The video has now been viewed over 1.4 million times.
