Teacher stumbles upon baby bears ‘dancing’ in Finnish forest – thinks he’s imagining things

If there’s one thing that you can rely on, it’s that nature will always surprise you. Often it’s just when you think you’ve seen everything that you’ll be left surprised, either pleasantly or otherwise so.

Valterri Mulkahainen, of Sotkamo, Finland, certainly was back in June of 2013. A physical education teacher by trade, Valterri had also turned his attentions to photography in his free time as a hobby. He began capturing the wildlife in his country, and was thereby able to record plenty of memorable moments through his camera lens.

Yet it was when he was exploring close to the town of Martinselkonen that he stumbled upon something right out of a story book.

He first noticed a bear and a handful of small clubs in a clearing.

“The cubs behaved like little children,” Valtteri explained to Bored Panda.

“They were playing, and even started a few friendly fights. I felt like I was on a playground in front of my house, where small children frolic around. That’s how much they reminded me of little children. At one point, the three of them got up on their hind legs and started pushing each other. It was like they were dancing in a circle.”

Valterri knew it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Tucked away in a shelter 50 metres from the action, he took photos all evening and night.

Valterri’s photos are made all the more amazing by the fact that bears in Finland generally try to stay away from humans as much as possible.

Upon detecting the presence of people they will often leave the area, making encounters such as the one Valterri witnessed all the more rare.

I don’t know about you, but it certainly brought a smile to my face seeing these bears interact with other just like they were little human children.
