Squirrels spotted taking time out to enjoy the sweet smell of flowers

I have the guilty confession of overlooking the many squirrels that take over my yard during the summer months.

The flights they take from branch to branch while collecting their nuts ready for the winter are completely missed by me as I’m all too used to seeing them.

But one photographer thought they were so special he spent hours taking hundreds of photos of squirrels, some he even gave names.

The results are pictures that are so unusual they immediately went viral.

Wildlife photographer Dick van Duijn, from the Netherlands, visited Austria to capture his favorite creatures and he did not leave disappointed.

In the image below the squirrel, he called Ziesel, is captured taking time out to enjoy the scent of a beautiful red poppy.

Dick told SWNS he spent two hours and took roughly 200 photos in order to capture the moment, according to Fox News.

“This curious ground squirrel started smelling and tasting the flower,” the photographer said. “I was really happy after capturing a photo like this.

“I went to Austria especially to photograph the ground squirrels,” he added. “It was great to witness this, and very satisfying.”

Moments later the squirrel, he called Ferdinand, (pictured below) leaned in further to take a bite of the tasty flower.

Wow what a wonderful moment to have captured on camera! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a squirrel smell a flower before, he looks so happy.
