Sneaky elephant surprises everyone by climbing over wall for mangoes

We all know how sneaky some animals can be. We’ve all had a mischievous dog figure out how to sneak through the gate or a cat who knows how to unlock doors.

But when you think of sneaky animals you probably don’t picture an elephant, a big loud animal not exactly known for its agility. Yet one story shows that elephants can have some pretty smooth moves… especially when they’re motivated by food.

Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park is a great place to experience local wildlife up close—and not just on safari: a parade of elephants regularly passes through the lobby, heading for the sweet mango trees on property.

But recently one hungry elephant took a very unexpected route in search of the tasty fruit.

He climbed over the wall!

The big bull elephant proved to be surprisingly limber, hauling his legs over the five-foot wall and making it look easy.

Andy Hogg, managing director of the company that owns the Mfuwe Lodge, caught the strange sight on camera. Even in a resort where elephants are part of the package, this was quite a surprising sight.

“The guests were very amused at the idea of a climbing elephant,” he told Times Now News. “They were in amazement that it would bother to climb over such a high wall.”

Andy suspects that wet weather may have convinced the elephant to take such an unusual path.

“He just chose the most direct route and made himself right at home,” he said.

Sadly, the elephant’s impressive athleticism was in vain: the mangoes he was after are actually out-of-season, and the empty-handed elephant simply hopped back over the fence.
