The Calcasieu River in Louisiana has a unique resident that only seems to make themselves visible once every few years.
Who is it? Pinky the dolphin, and as the name suggests, Pinky is a pink dolphin.
It’s believed that Pinky was first spotted in 2007 by Erik Rue, a charter boat captain, and since then she’s only been captured on camera a dozen or so times.

Greg Barsh, a scientist at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, told National Geographic that he believes Pinky is an albino. Barsh believes this to be true because of the dolphin’s reddish eyes and visible blood vessels.
If Pinky is an albino, it’s even rarer that Pinky has managed to survive for so long because typically albinism also comes with other health problems.

“We still see her swimming almost every day in the summertime,” he told WGNO. “We’ve seen her a lot in the last few weeks. She looks happy and healthy.”
In 2015, Rue gave an interview with WGNO and shared that he had seen Pinky mating. The big question he had was if she was pregnant what color would her calf be?

In 2017, we got our answer.
“It was amazing to see,” Bridget Boudreaux told KATC. “Like I said we saw two but I couldn’t get both on video at the time. I was astonished.”

More recently another video surfaced, this time it clearly showed two pink dolphins enjoying the waves in front of a ship along the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
