The incident took place in February 2016, but that doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking.

Reportedly, residents of Sion, a neighborhood in Mumbai, had been dealing with a macaque and several other monkeys stealing fruit and destroying pillows for about six months.

The fed up residents complained to their local government, and a professional monkey catcher was brought in to deal with the issue.

When someone spotted the suspected culprit, they called the monkey catcher and they quickly set a trap.

The macaque was caught and then bound with its hands and feet tied and a rope around its neck. And as if that wasn’t enough of a horrific punishment, a crowd gathered and reports suggested that the crowd cheered as the monkey sat there before being placed in a cage.

Once the monkey was caged, it was untied and given grapes to eat.

Officials from Mumbai’s Maharashtra Forest Department said they planned to release the macaque far away from the city it had terrorized with its antics.

While the thought of a new home, possibly one away from humans, sounds nice, nothing will ever make up for the humiliation the monkey faced.
