One officer’s sharp eyes saved this cat 🧡
A fluffy orange cat, given the name Garfield by rescuers, survived being struck by a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train. Footage by local animal rescuer John DeBacker shows the weakened cat being removed from the tracks a day after he was struck near the Lindenhurst station. “The cat was rescued on April 12, but first spotted on April 11 by a train engineer who thought the cat was already dead,” “When he saw the cat move its head the following day, he reached out to me.” Trains were halted so rescuers and MTA officers could step in to take Garfield to safety. The cat was “fighting for his life” under the care of South Shore Feral Care (SSFC), a local rescue service, which said he had a “completely fractured front limb, a broken nose, two dislocated hips.” “Garfield was pulled from the Long Island Rail Road tracks in what can only be described as a miracle,” “Despite everything he has endured, Garfield is alert, responsive, and fighting. He has youth on his side - and with the right care, right now, he has a real chance to heal beautifully,” the service said.
