Now researchers have concluded that women have much better sleep with their dogs by their side rather than a human partner or even cats.

The survey involved 962 women living in the U.S., of which 55 percent of them shared the bed with at least one dog and 31 percent of them shared the bed with at least one cat. The study found 57 percent of the women shared the bed with a human partner.

The research team, led by associate professor Christy L. Hoffman, found that dogs were less likely to wake their owners in the middle of the night than cats and humans.

“Dog owners have to adjust to their dogs’ needs to toilet each morning, and this helps keep dog owners on a relatively strict wake-up routine. And dogs’ major sleep periods tend to coincide more closely with humans’ than do cats.” she said, according to the  Huffington Post.

Feeling more secure

Researchers found that women felt more secure at night with their dogs by their side.

“Some dog owners may take comfort in the thought that their dog will alert them in the case of an intruder or other type of emergency,” Hoffman said. “A cat is less likely to take on this role.”
