Dalmatian gives birth to a record-breaking litter – all 19 puppies survived

Melissa O’Brien, who has had Dalmatians for 13 years, but has been breeding and showing the spotted dogs for a decade, was not entirely surprised by the big litter because “they run in the bloodline,” but the record-breaking number is still surprising.

“Records aside it is pretty incredible all of them are alive, we had to supplement and bottle feed a few for a while to help mum out,” Melissa, the dog’s breeder, said, according to The Canberra Times.

Before Melody gave birth, Melissa arranged for a C-section due to the amount of weight, about 33 pounds, that Melody gained. As soon as her water broke, the 3½-year-old dog was brought in “because if we had waited a few more hours we would have had dead puppies.”

A vet along with eight people assisted with delivering her puppies.

The puppies, which are named after Disney movies, have developed their own personalities and will go off to their new homes within the next few weeks.

As for the proud parents, Melody and the father, seven-year-old Lukas, won’t be having anymore puppies.

“It is definitely the first and last for Melody, I had already decided to get her desexed before she had the puppies,” Melissa said.
