Parrot calls his owner’s name in the middle of the night to alert him of house fire

Everyone knows the best thing about owning a parrot is that they’re the only pet that can talk! Or at least, they can repeat things you say, but it’s still a fascinating behavior and a neat party trick.

Granted, sometimes an overly talkative parrot can get you in trouble, like the bird whose cries for “help!” got a false alarm visit from the police.

But in one recent story, a parrot cried for help in a real emergency, helping to save its owner’s life.

Anton Nguyen, from Brisbane, Australia, was fast asleep when he heard his pet parrot, Eric, shouting his name: “Anton! Anton!”

Anton woke up, and realized what the parrot was trying to alert him to: his house was on fire. “He started to yell so I woke up and I smelled a bit of smoke,” Anton told ABC News. “I grabbed Eric, opened the door and looked to the back of the house and saw some flames.”

The “parrot alarm” had gone off moments before the actual fire alarm, so this smart bird helped give his owner precious moments to get out safely.

And the fire was serious, sweeping through the whole building.

“The fire’s pretty much well engulfed the whole premise, with exposures on the left hand side that have needed protecting with some blistering on the exterior,” said QFES Acting Inspector Cam Thomas.

But Anton is out safe and sound, thanks to his trusty pet.

“I’m in shock but I’m fine,” Anton told ABC News. “Everything’s alright so long as I have myself and the bird.”

Amazing! Parrots aren’t just smart enough to talk, they’re smart enough to alert you of danger!
