Owner abandons sick, mangey puppy by leaving him tied outside pharmacy

A dog needs a lot of love and care. As their owner, it’s your responsibility to treat them when they are ill or in poor condition, and if you’re not up to that responsibility, you shouldn’t get one.

One dog owner apparently wasn’t up to the task, and left their poor unhealthy dog tied up in public, abandoning it. But luckily, he has gotten a bright new start thanks to the hard work of some rescuers.

In 2016, a 7-month-old puppy named Dempsey was found tied to a CVS pharmacy in Georgia. The poor thing was suffering from severe mange and an eye infection.

When it became clear that no one was picking him up and the pup was abandoned, Dekalb County Animal Control picked Dempsey up, and soon he ended up in the care of Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue.

A volunteer named Stacey Greenwald gave teh puppy a foster home, and got to work treating his dire conditions.

“He was a giant, bloody scab,” Stacey told The Dodo. Dempsey was given antibiotics and medicated baths.

According to Friends to the Forlorn, he was also treated for worms, mange and kennel cough.

With a little love slowly started to recover. “He was so sad and miserable in his own skin when I first got him,” Stacey said. “But he bounced back so quickly. He went from being pretty rough and sad to being literally one of the happiest, friendliest, most easygoing dogs I’ve ever met.”

The group raised money for the dog’s treatments, which also included his vaccinations, neutering and microchipping.

“His infections have almost cleared up and he is feeling good as new,” Friends to the Forlorn reported two-and-a-half weeks after Dempsey was found.

They said he had even started learning commands, and would soon be released from quarantine and be able to play with other dogs.

“He is a super happy, funny boy who absolutely loves everyone and everything.”

And this story has a very happy ending!

In July, about three months after Dempsey was first discovered, the group announced that he had found a forever home!

“Dempsey’s new awesome family met him at our Pups & Pints event and immediately went home and filled out an adoption application,” Friends to the Forlorn wrote on Facebook.

Dempsey’s new family has two other dogs for him to play with and a big backyard. It definitely sounds like the perfect home.

“We are so, so happy Dempsey has found a family who will love and care for him forever!”
