Masked robber chases 9-year-old who’s home alone up the stairs – then the unexpected occurs

It’s always difficult to determine when — and for how long — you can leave younger children alone at home alone.

Even if a parent trusts their child to be good, factors that are beyond their control are always a concern.

While 9-year-old Shane Smith’s mother left him home for a little while, he faced a terrifying outside factor — an intruder.

Shane’s mom left him home alone while she picked up his siblings. She assumed it was safe, because it was only for a little while…

But then the unthinkable occured.

“I was upstairs when it happened. I thought it was my mom because I heard someone trying to open the door, and I thought it was her trying to unlock the door with her keys,” Shane told WIBW-TV.

Unfortunately it wasn’t his mom — it was a man in a ski mask. He had entered the house, but luckily he didn’t get far.

“The dude started chasing me upstairs and I called my dog down and they started to fight,” Shane said.

The family pit bull saved the boy’s life

“It was in a blink of an eye and I was really scared. Because, it was only me home and I didn’t know who it was and the only protection I had was my dog.”

Shane told the police that he thought the man was trying to get him.

“It seemed like he wanted me because when he saw me, he just slowly walked toward me and he didn’t look at anything else. He just kept his eyes on me,” Shane said.

When his dog, Baby Girl, came to the rescue and went to attack the intruder, the man ran right out the door and fled in a silver car.

A neighbor called Shane’s mother to tell her what had happened.
