Have you ever been baffled by the fact that dogs and cats are capable of finding their way home, and yet there’s some humans who get lost even while following directions?
In short, scientists believe animals, dogs in particular, are able to find their way back using their keen sense of smell. But at a certain point you have to wonder…exactly how far away does that trail extend?
Would you believe 57 miles?
When Colton Michael returned to his home in Lawson, Missouri recently he saw a dog sitting on his front porch.
“Cleo was laying on the front porch at the front door, just laying there, waiting for somebody it seemed like,” Michael told CNN.
The 4-year-old Labrador Retriever was scared and wouldn’t let them near her, though they were eventually able to take her to see if she had been microchipped.
Luckily she had.
They learned that Cleo used to live at their current home.
Michael went on Facebook to search for Cleo’s owners and saw her family posted about a lost dog about a week earlier. He messaged them, and they were shocked.
“I told him that we found his dog, but once I told him where we were, he was kind of speechless,” he said.
Cleo’s new home, where she had been living since 2018, was in Olathe, a 57-mile trip from her old home.
“That’s a hike for anybody,” Michael told KMBC.
While no one will ever know how Cleo made the nearly 60-mile journey from Olathe to Lawson, Cleo’s owners are glad she’s safe and sound.
“It just feels really good to be reunited with her,” her owner Drew said.
Wow! What an incredible story. I’m so glad Cleo has been reunited with her owners.
This serves as an important reminder to have your pets microchipped.
