Baby Girl, dog left tied to fire hydrant by owner, finds a new home

A heartbreaking viral story now has a happy ending: Baby Girl, the dog left tied to a fire hydrant after her owner couldn’t take care of her, has now found a new home.

Baby Girl, a tan mixed-breed dog, was abandoned in Green Bay, Wisconsin earlier this month. According to WFRV Local 5, she was left with a note explaining that the owners could no longer care for the dog, along with a backpack full of the dog’s treats, toys and food.

The dog’s abandonment shocked people. “Cannot believe someone could do this,” wrote local woman Kyle Rose Engelhardt, who shared the photo on Facebook.

Baby Girl was taken to the Wisconsin Humane Society, who reported that she was “doing great” in stray hold. While many were outraged at the dog’s owners for abandoning her, the Humane Society was more sympathetic, saying it was clear the dog was loved and the owners simply could not care for her anymore.

“It’s evident just how much you loved her and we can see you did your best while struggling with your own medical complications and challenges of life,” they wrote, addressing the owner.

The owner, who has remained anonymous, later explained her decision to leave Baby Girl behind, saying it was the hardest thing she ever had to do. The woman was homeless and undergoing chemotherapy, and couldn’t care for the dog while living on the streets.

“It was the worst. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but I knew she would be okay. Somebody would pick her up and she’d be safe,” she told WBAY.

“I hope she finds a fantastic family. She deserves it. Just forgive me and bless Baby Girl. Make sure she’s ok.”

Thankfully, her prayers have now been answered: Baby Girl has found her new home.

On May 10, the Wisconsin Humane Society announced that Baby Girl would be put up for adoption. They stated that the dog was found to have canine diabetes, and that her new owner would have to manage her health.

But it didn’t take long for a number of people to eagerly request adopting Baby Girl. And on May 12, they announced that the dog “officially found a new home.”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” they wrote.
