Stephy Hirst adopted Omar from a litter in 2013 and took him back to her home in Melbourne, Australia.
It wasn’t long before she realized she had a special cat on her hands, one that soon found internet fame.
Stephy had adopted a Maine Coon cat, the largest domesticated cat breed.
Omar grew larger than Stephy and her boyfriend had expected, and she now thinks that her fluffy orange feline could be the world’s longest cat.
At just 3 years old, in 2017, Omar measured 3 feet 11 inches and weighed 30.8 pounds.
The record at that time was a 3 feet 10.5 inch Maine Coon cat from West Yorkshire, in England, according to BBC News.
Stephy set up an Instagram account for her giant cat and soon Omar had thousands of followers, even catching the attention of the Guinness World Records which requested Omar’s measurements.
Like any other cat Omar wakes early and eats some dry cat food, plays in the yard and naps on the couple’s trampoline.
But this cat enjoys a hearty meal of raw kangaroo meat in the evening.
“We buy human-grade kangaroo meat at the supermarket,” Ms Hirst told BBC News. “It’s the only meat we could find that he actually wants to eat.”
His size does cause a problem when he needs to be taken to the vet; he’s too heavy to carry so Stephy has to use a dog crate.
Omar’s also banned from the bedroom at night.
“He does take up a bit too much room on the bed so he gets locked out of the bedroom at night,” she said.
