Prom is a very special night for a young person. It’s a memory you’ll remember forever, so it’s important to go with a date who really means something to you.
Some people take their boyfriends or girlfriends, some people just go as friends… but some teens really go outside the box.
When one teen couldn’t find a date, he decided to bring someone very special to him—and their prom photos have been the talk of the internet ever since.
Years ago, Sam Steingard found a stray cat behind a Ruby Tuesdays restaurant. He took her in, and named her “Ruby.”
The two have been inseparable ever since, and Ruby has become a beloved part of the family.
“When I was younger, she would walk with me to school and then when we arrived she would walk herself home and meet me there after school,” Caroline Steingard, Sam’s sister, told Love Meow. “She’s a great cat.”
In 2016, ten years after finding Ruby, Sam was a senior in high school. His prom was coming up, and, according to his sister, he “couldn’t find a date” with any of his classmates.
So instead, he took the most special lady in his life: Ruby.
“My brother took our cat to prom,” Caroline told Love Meow. “My mom decided to buy our cat a dress and sparkly collar so my brother would have someone to take pictures with.”
And that picture is truly priceless:
Ruby, in her sparkly dress, stares up at her “date” with a look that could only be described as pure, adoring love.
Sadly, Ruby wasn’t actually allowed into the prom, but Sam had only been planning to stop by for a short time anyway.
That perfect photo went viral after Caroline posted it on Imgur. It’s been shared countless times since then, including as a Reddit photoshop battle.
After going viral Sam and his sister went away to college, and both missed their cat very much, though they visited often.
But Ruby has her own Instagram account, @rubytheprettykitty, and years after prom night she’s still going strong (and has over 6,000 followers!)
She celebrated her birthday in September… revealing that yes, she still has her old prom dress:
