Shelter worker crochets new pair of ears for cat after hers are removed

Shelters work hard to help the animals in their care, from keeping them healthy to finding them forever homes.

But sometimes they go above and beyond and do something extra special to make a difference in an animal’s life. One shelter provided an incredible gift to a cat, leading to a very happy ending.

A cat called Lady in a Fur Coat, or just Lady for short, arrived at Wisconsin’s Dane County Humane Society in December.

She’s required a lot of medical attention—and had to have her ears surgically removed due to due to chronic infection and hematomas, according to a Facebook post.

Despite losing her ears, this cat has stayed positive and friendly, giving “happy head bumps to everyone she meets.”

“It’s amazing because we see these strays and medical cases come in and I think we’re always surprised by their resiliency,” spokesperson Marissa DeGroot told CNN.

But Lady got a big surprise from one of the shelter’s employees. Staff member Ash Collins used her crochet skills to craft the cat a new pair of fuzzy purple ears!

Lady is now looking cuter and more stylish than ever… and that’s not all: soon after getting her new ears, she also got a new home!

The poor cat got adopted, helped no doubt by her new look and the attention her story brought to the shelter.

“I was more than happy to use my crochet skills to help Lady stand out and get the second chance she deserved, and I’m so honored to be a small part of her happy ending,” Ash Collins told CNN.

“Staff and volunteers at Dane County Humane Society consistently go above and beyond for the animals in our care.”

We’re so glad this poor cat got a new look and a new forever home! It goes to show the real difference shelter employees can make with a little creativity.
