We’ve heard plenty of stories of dogs and even some cats finding their way back home, but how many stories have you heard about geese getting lost and then returning home on their own?
Nine years ago, Carla Shymko adopted Steve and his sister Lulu. It quickly became apparent that Steve always wanted to be in on the action.
“If I was in the yard he would always be right beside me,” Shymko told The Dodo. “He and Lulu would sleep right beside our large dogs and they would be the first to welcome guests when they would arrive.”
So when one day in June she went to check on Steve and the rest of her animals at their home in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, she became worried when she saw a bunch of white feathers and no Steve.
Shymko enlisted her family to help search for the goose, and then after a bit of debate asked neighbors on Facebook.
“I was a little hesitant,” she said. “I thought people might think I’m crazy looking for a goose.”
And it was a good thing she posted on Facebook because someone had seen one of her posts – she shared on a local lost and found pet page as well as other pages – and said they believed they saw a fox carrying a goose in its mouth that day.
“We were devastated,” Shymko said. “Especially the thought of him being hurt badly and suffering was just so sad for us. He was such a huge part of our family and we were heartbroken.”
But Shymko’s grief turned to joy the following day when her husband heard a tapping at their door.
“Steve was waiting at our back sliding doors where he would always wait for me when I would go in the house.”
The goose was weak, extremely tired, and scared but he was alive. And he was home.
Although it took a little while for Steve to recover, Shymko said he’s doing much better.
“We took it slow but he is doing amazing now and soon as he hears us in the morning he is back to letting the whole surrounding area know that Steve is back.”
