Baby Elephant Rescued From River and Reunited With Mom

A newborn elephant calf was swept away by a powerful current in the Teesta River in West Bengal, India — but five fishermen refused to let her disappear downstream. The fishermen spotted the tiny calf struggling in the water with only her trunk above the surface. They immediately followed her in two boats, racing downstream for nearly 2.5 miles (4 km) before finally reaching her. The exhausted calf was pulled aboard and taken safely to shore, where forest officials checked her and found no injuries. The rescue team then carefully returned her to an area where her herd was believed to be sheltering, keeping human contact to a minimum. After about two hours, the calf's mother approached. She took her baby into the water, bathed her and eventually led her back toward the forest. Thanks to the fishermen's quick actions, the three- to four-day-old elephant was safely reunited with her mother. 🐘❤️
